Czech Parliament Names Tomio Okamura as Speaker
Okamura secured 107 votes from 197 ballots cast in a confidential vote.
The SPD operates within a three-party governing alliance alongside the ANO movement, helmed by former prime minister Andrej Babis, and the Motorists for Themselves party.
The coalition commands 108 seats in the 200-seat legislative body, establishing a governing majority positioned to form a new administration under Babis's leadership.
Born in Tokyo in 1972 to a Czech mother and a father of Japanese-Korean ancestry, Okamura's elevation to speaker represents the most powerful political position ever achieved by an SPD member.
The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies bears responsibility for managing legislative proceedings and may be required to assume certain presidential functions should the head of state become incapacitated.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala's current government is slated to convene Thursday before formally tendering its resignation to President Petr Pavel, following the inauguration of the new parliamentary session.
